Florida is one of the hardest climates in the country on HVAC systems. With 10-11 months of active cooling, humidity that rarely drops below 70%, and summer heat that pushes feels-like temperatures past 110°F, your AC works harder here than almost anywhere else in the US.
Knowing a few key things about how your system works - and what to watch for - can save you money, extend your system's life, and help you know when something genuinely needs professional attention.
Our technician on a commercial service call - Florida's heat is hard on every type of system
In Florida, your air filter is working overtime. Year-round operation, high humidity, pollen from spring through fall, and fine dust mean filters fill up much faster than in northern climates. A clogged filter doesn't just mean poor air quality - it forces your system to work harder, driving up energy bills, and can cause the evaporator coil to freeze solid.
Change your filter every 4-6 weeks. Keep a supply at home. It's the single cheapest maintenance task with the biggest impact on system performance and longevity.
Your outdoor condenser unit has one job: release the heat pulled from inside your home. To do that, it needs airflow. Grass clippings, leaves, cottonwood seeds, and debris that accumulate on the fins block that airflow - forcing the system to work harder and wear out faster.
A few times per year, rinse the unit down gently with a garden hose (power off first). Keep vegetation trimmed back at least 2 feet on all sides. It takes 10 minutes and makes a real difference in efficiency.
Checking refrigerant on a Trane system - low refrigerant is a common Florida service call
If a technician tells you your refrigerant is low and just tops it off without finding the source, that's a problem. Refrigerant doesn't 'get used up' - a system low on refrigerant has a leak somewhere. Simply adding more refrigerant without locating and repairing the leak means you'll be paying for another recharge in a few months.
At Best Chance Air Services, we always find and fix the source - not just the symptom.
Because Florida is so humid, your AC pulls enormous amounts of water out of the air every day. That water drains out through the condensate line - and in our climate, algae grows in those lines constantly. A clogged drain backs up into the drain pan, trips the float switch, and shuts your system off.
Prevention is easy: pour a cup of diluted bleach or white vinegar down the drain line monthly. It takes 30 seconds and prevents one of the most common service calls we receive.

Best Chance Tip: Don't ignore a system that's struggling. A system that's working too hard to maintain temperature is typically 2-4 weeks away from a more serious and more expensive failure. Catching it early saves money.
In Florida, we recommend professional maintenance twice a year - before summer and before winter. A proper tune-up catches problems before they become failures, keeps your warranty valid, and ensures your system is running as efficiently as possible going into the most demanding season.
