5 Quick Checks to Do Before Calling for AC Repair in Florida
Date: January 15, 2026 By: Best Chance Air Services Category: DIY Tips Location: Serving Volusia, Flagler, Seminole & Orange Counties

Before you call for an AC repair, take 5 minutes and run through this checklist. We've arrived at homes where the fix was a tripped breaker or a clogged filter - simple things a homeowner can handle in seconds. This list could save you a service call fee.

And if you do end up calling us, knowing what you've already checked helps our technicians arrive prepared - often meaning faster diagnosis and less time in your home.

Check 1 - Your Thermostat Settings

This sounds obvious, but it's the cause of more service calls than you'd think - especially after a power outage when settings can reset.

  1. Make sure it's set to COOL , not HEAT or OFF
  2. Make sure the fan is set to AUTO , not ON (ON runs the fan constantly even when not cooling)
  3. Make sure the set temperature is lower than the current room temperature
  4. Check the batteries - a blank thermostat screen is almost always dead batteries

Check 2 - Your Air Filter

A completely clogged filter is one of the most common causes of AC failures in Florida. Our year-round operation means filters fill up fast - we recommend replacing them every 4-6 weeks, not every 3 months as most packaging suggests.

Pull out your filter and hold it up to a light. If you can't see light through it, replace it immediately. A clogged filter can cause the system to freeze up, short-cycle, or shut down completely.

Best Chance Tip: Buy a 6-pack of filters and keep them near your air handler. When you replace one, immediately put the new one in. Set a phone reminder for 5 weeks from now.

Check 3 - Your Circuit Breaker

Find your electrical panel and look for a breaker labeled 'AC' or 'HVAC.' A tripped breaker won't be fully on or off - it'll be stuck in the middle position.

To reset it: push it firmly to the full OFF position first, then back to ON. If it trips again immediately, stop and call us - that indicates an electrical problem that needs a professional.

Note: Never repeatedly reset a breaker that keeps tripping. This is a sign of a real electrical issue and should be diagnosed by a professional.

Check 4 - The Condensate Drain Pan

Look under your indoor air handler for the drain pan. If there's standing water in it, your condensate drain line is clogged with algae - very common in Florida's humidity. Many systems have a float switch that automatically shuts the AC off when this happens to prevent water damage.

Monthly prevention: pour a cup of diluted bleach or white vinegar down the drain line to keep algae from building up.

Check 5 - The Outdoor Unit

Go outside and make sure:

  • The outdoor unit is actually running (fan spinning)
  • Nothing is blocking airflow - keep 2 feet clear on all sides
  • The disconnect switch in the grey box next to the unit is in the ON position
  • The unit isn't covered in debris or grass clippings

When to Stop DIY and Call Us

If you hear any of these noises, turn the system off and call us - do not keep running it:

  • Grinding or squealing - failing motor bearings
  • Loud banging or clanking - loose or broken internal component
  • Constant buzzing without the fan starting - failed capacitor
  • Hissing or bubbling - refrigerant leak

Ran through the checklist and still not working? Call us - we'll diagnose and fix it fast.
